CONVICTION




اليَقينُ / Conviction

1. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: خَيرُ ما اُلقِيَ في القَلبِ اليَقينُ.
1. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The best of what has been placed in the heart is conviction.’
[Amali al-Saduq, p. 395, no. 1]

2. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: أيُّها النّاسُ، سَلُوا اللّه اليَقينَ، وارغَبوا إلَيهِ في العافيَةِ؛ فإنّ أجَلَّ النِّعمَةِ العافِيَةُ، وخَيرُ مادامَ في القَلبِ اليَقينُ، والمَغبونُ مَن غُبِنَ دِينَهُ، والمَغبوطُ مَن غُبِطَ يَقينَهُ.
2. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘O people! Ask Allah for conviction and seek good health from him, for the greatest of blessings is good health and the best thing that can reside in the heart is conviction. A cheated man is he who has been cheated of his religion and an enviable person is he whose conviction is envied.’

اليقين


CONVICTION




3. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: ما أعظَمَ سَعادَةَ مَن بُوشِرَقَلبُهُ بِبَردِ اليَقينِ!.
3. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘How great the prosperity of one whose heart is blessed with the coolness of conviction.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 9556]

4. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: باليَقينِ تُدرَكُ الغايَةُ القُصوى.
4. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘With conviction the ultimate goal can be reached.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Sermon 157]

5. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: على قَدرِ الدِّينِ تَكونُ قُوَّهُ اليَقينِ.
5. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The strength of one’s conviction is proportionate to the extent of one’s faith.’

6. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: اليَقينُ عِمادُ الإيمانِ.
6. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Conviction is the pillar of faith.’

7. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: نَومٌ على يَقينٍ خَيرٌ مِن صَلاةٍ في شَكٍّ.
7. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Sleeping with conviction is better than praying with doubt.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 9958]

8. الإمامُ الباقرُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: لَم يُقسَمْ بَينَ النّاسِ شيءٌ أقَلُّ مِن اليَقينِ.
8. Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘There is nothing least divided among people than conviction.’
[al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 52, no. 5]

9. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: إنّ الإيمانَ أفضَلُ من الإسلامِ، وإنّ اليَقينَ أفضَلُ مِن الإيمانِ، وما مِن شيءٍ أعَزُّ مِن اليَقينِ.
9. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Faith is better than submission
[Islam] and conviction is better than faith, and there is nothing more honourable than conviction.’

10. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: إنّ العَمَلَ الدّائمَ القَليلَ علَى اليَقينِ أفضَلُ عِندَ اللّه مِن العَمَلِ الكَثيرِ على غَيرِ يَقينٍ.
10. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Continuous but small actions
[performed] with conviction are better in the sight of Allah than numerous actions without conviction.’

عِلمُ اليَقينِ / Certain Knowledge

11. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: إنّ اللّه تعالى يَقولُ: ثَلاثُ خِصالٍ غَيَّبتُهُنَّ عَن عِبادِي لَو رآهُنَّ رجُلٌ ما عَمِلَ سُوءا أبَدا: لَو كَشَفتُ غِطائي فَرَآني حتّى يَستَيقِنَ، ويَعلَمَ كَيفَ أفعَلُ بخَلقي إذا أمَتُّهُم.
11. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Allah Almighty says, ‘There are three things that I have concealed from My servants such that if a person was to see them, they would never do bad: if I was to uncover My veil and they were to see Me such that they had conviction, and if they were to know what I do with My creation when I make them die…’

تفسيرُ اليَقينِ / Interpretation of Certainty

12. جَبرئيلُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ وقَد جاءَ إلَى النَّبيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ :يا رسولَ اللّه، إنّ اللّه تباركَ وتعالى أرسَلَني إلَيكَ بِهَديَّةٍ لَم يُعطِها أحَدا قَبلَكَ . قالَ رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: قلتُ: وماهِي ؟ قالَ: الصَّبرُ وأحسَنُ مِنهُ إلى أن قالَ قلتُ: فما تَفسيرُ اليَقينِ ؟ قالَ: المُوقِنُ يَعمَلُ للّه كأنّهُ يَراهُ، فإن لَم يَكُن يَرى اللّه فإنّ اللّه يَراهُ، وأن يَعلَمَ يَقينا أنَّ ما أصابَهُ لَم يَكُن لِيُخطِئَهُ، وأنَّ ما أخطأهُ لَم يَكُن لِيُصيبَهُ، وهذا كُلُّهُ أغصانُ التَّوكُّلِ ومَدرَجَهُ الزُّهدِ.
12. The archangel Gabriel (AS), coming down to the Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, Allah Almighty sent me to you with a gift which He has not given to anyone before you. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘I asked him, ‘And what is it?’ He said, ‘Patience, and something better than that… until he said, ‘I asked, ‘So what is the interpretation of conviction?’ Gabriel said, ‘A person of conviction acts for Allah as if he sees Him, and even though he cannot see Allah, Allah can see him; and it is to know with conviction that whatever afflicts him would not have missed him, and whatever has missed him would not have afflicted him. These are all branches of complete trust
[in Allah] and the steps to asceticism.’

13. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الإسلامُ هُو التَّسليمُ، والتَّسليمُ هُو اليَقينُ، واليَقينُ هُو التَّصديقُ، والتَّصديقُ هُو الإقرارُ، والإقرارُ هُو الأداءُ، والأداءُ هُو العَمَلُ.
13. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Islam is submission, submission is conviction, conviction is attestation
[to the truth], and attestation is testifying, and testifying is fulfilment
[of one’s obligations], and fulfilment is action.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 125]

علاماتُ المُوقِنِ / The Signs of a Person of Conviction

14. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: أمّـا عَـلامَةُ المُوقِنِ فَسِتَّةٌ: أيْقَنَ باللّه حَقّا فآمَنَ بهِ، وأيقَنَ بأنّ المَوتَ حقٌّ فحَذِرَهُ، وأيقَنَ بأنّ البَعثَ حَقٌّ فخافَ الفَضيحَةَ، وأيقَنَ بأنّ الجَنّةَ حَقٌّ فاشتاقَ إلَيها، وأيقَنَ بأنّ النّارَ حَقٌّ فظَهَرَ سَعيُهُ لِلنَّجاةِ مِنها، وأيقَنَ بأنّ الحِسابَ حَقٌّ فحاسَبَ نَفسَهُ.
14. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘There are six signs of a person of conviction: he has truly attained conviction in Allah and believed in Him, he is convinced that death is true and he is wary of it, he is convinced that Resurrection is true and he fears shame , he is convinced that Heaven is true and he longs for it, he is convinced that Hell is true and his endeavour is apparent in his wanting to be saved from it, he is convinced that the Account is true and so he takes account of himself.’

15. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: يُستَدَلُّ علَى اليَقينِ بِقِصَرِ الأملِ، وإخلاصِ العَملِ، والزُّهدِ في الدُّنيا.
15. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Conviction can be proved by the shortening of one’s expectations, sincerity in one’s actions, and abstention from worldliness.’

16. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: مَن أيقَنَ أنّهُ يُفارِقُ الأحبابَ، ويَسكُنُ التُّرابَ، ويُواجِهُ الحِسابَ، ويَستَغني عَمّا خَلَّفَ، ويَفتَقِرُ إلى ما قَدَّمَ، كانَ حَرِيّا بِقِصَرِ الأمَلِ، وطُولِ العَمَلِ.
16. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever has conviction in that he will depart from his loved ones, will dwell in the earth, be faced with the Account, be in no need for what he has left behind but be in need of what he has sent forth, is worthy of having short expectations and lengthy deeds.’

17. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: مَن تَيَقَّنَ أنّ اللّه سبحانَهُ يَراهُ وهُو يَعمَلُ بِمَعاصيهِ فَقَد جَعَلَهُ أهوَنَ النّاظِرينَ.
17. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever has conviction that Allah sees him while he continues to commit sins, then he has considered Him the most insignificant of onlookers.’

ما يُفسِدُ اليَقينَ / What Corrupts Conviction

18. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: يُفسِدُ اليَقينَ الشَّكُّ وغَلَبَةُ الهَوى.
18. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Doubt and being overcome by one’s desires corrupts conviction.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 11011]

19. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الجَدَلُ في الدِّينِ يُفسِدُاليَقينَ.
19. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Disputing about religion corrupts conviction.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 1177]

20. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: خِلطَهُ أبناءِ الدُّنيا تَشينُ الدِّينَ، وتُضعِفُ اليَقينَ.
20. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Associating with worldly people defames religion and weakens conviction.’

21. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: حُرِمَ الحَريصُ خَصلَتَينِ ولَزِمَتهُ خَصلَتانِ :حُرِمَ القَناعَةَ فافتَقَدَ الرّاحَةَ، وحُرِمَ الرِّضا فافتَقَدَ اليَقينَ.
21. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘A greedy person has been deprived of two things, as a result of which he lacks two more things: he is deprived of contentment and so he lacks comfort, and he is deprived of satisfaction and so he lacks conviction.’

ضَعفُ اليَقينِ / Weakness of Conviction

22. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: ما أخافُ على اُمَّتي إلاّ ضَعفَ اليَقينِ.
22. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘I do not fear for my community anything other than weakness of conviction.’
[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 7332]

23. رسولُ اللّه صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيه وَ آلِهِ: إنّ مِن ضَعفِ اليَقينِ أن تُرضِيَ النّاسَ بِسَخَطِ اللّه تـعالى، و أن تَحمَدَهُم عـلى رِزقِ اللّه تـعالى، وأن تَـذُمَّهُم على ما لَم يُؤتِكَ اللّه .
23. The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Weakness of conviction is that you satisfy people by displeasing Allah Almighty, and that you praise them for the sustenance that Allah Almighty has given you, and you blame them for what Allah has not given you.’

ثَمَراتُ اليَقينِ / The Fruit of Conviction

24. الامامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: غايَةُ اليَقينِ الإخلاصُ، غايَةُ الإخلاصِ الخَلاصُ.
24. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The goal of conviction is sincerity, and the goal of sincerity is salvation.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 6347-6348]

25. الامامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: زُهدُ المَرءِ فيما يَفنى على قَدرِ يَقينِهِ بما يَبقى.
25. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The abstention of a person from all that is perishable is in proportion of his conviction in all that is eternal.’

26. الامامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: التَّوكُّلُ مِن قُوَّةِ اليَقينِ.
26. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Trust
[in Allah] is from the strength of conviction.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 699]

27. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الصَّبرُ مِن اليَقينِ.
27. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Patience is from conviction.’
[Mishkat al-Anwar, p. 20]

28. الإمامُ الصّادقُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: الرِّضا بِمَكروهِ القَضاءِ مِن أعلى دَرَجاتِ اليَقينِ.
28. Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Satifaction with unpleasant decree is one of the highest levels of conviction.’

ازدِيادُ اليَقينِ / Increasing Conviction

29. الإمامُ عليٌّ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: لَو كُشِفَ الغِطاءُ ما ازدَدتُ يَقينا.
29. Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘If the veils were to be uncovered for me my conviction would not increase.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 7569]

30. الإمامُ الكاظمُ عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ: تَعاهَدُوا عِبادَ اللّه نِعَمَهُ بإصلاحِكُم أنفُسَكُم تَزدادُوا يَقينا، وتَربَحوا نَفِيسا ثَمِينا.
30. Imam al-Kazim (AS) said, ‘O servants of Allah, make use of His blessings by reforming your selves and your conviction will increase, and you will gain something precious and valuable.’

31. الإمامُ الرِّضا عَلَيهِ السَّلامُ لَمّا سُئلَ عَن قَولِ اللّه لإبراهيمَ: «أوَ لَمْ تُؤْمِنْ قالَ بَلى و لكِنْ لِيَطْمَئنَّ قَلْبي» أكانَ في قَلبهِ شَكٌّ؟: لا، كانَ على يَقينٍ، ولكنَّهُ أرادَ مِن اللّه الزِّيادَةَ في يَقينِهِ.
31. Imam al-Riza (AS), when asked about Allah's saying to Abraham: "He said, ‘Do you not believe?’ He said, ‘Yes indeed, but in order that my heart may be at rest", and whether there was a doubt in his heart, said, ‘No, he had conviction, but he wanted Allah to increase his conviction.’
