الخُلُق


CHARACTER




حُسنِ الخُلُقِ / Good Naturedness (Character)

1ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : الإسلامُ حُسنُ الخُلقِ.
1– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Islam is to be good-natured .’
[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 5225]

2ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : حُسنُ الخُلقِ نِصْفُ الدِّينِ.
2– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Good nature is half of religion.’

الخُلُق


CHARACTER




3- الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : عُنوانُ صَحيفَةِ المؤمنِ حُسنُ خُلقِهِ.
3– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The distinguishing feature of a believer is his good nature.
[ Bihar al-Anwar, v. 71, p. 392, no. 59]

4ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : حُسنُ الخُلقِ رأسُ كُلِّ بِرٍّ.
4– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Good naturedness is the fountainhead of every goodness.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 4857]

5ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : لا عَيشَ أهْنَأُ مِن حُسنِ الخُلقِ .
5– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘There is no life more wholesome than that lived with a good nature.’

مَا يَتَرتّبُ عَليَ حُسنِ الخُلُقِ / The Consequences of Good Naturedness

6ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : إنّ العَبدَ لَيَبلُغُ بحُسنِ خُلقِهِ عَظيمَ دَرَجاتِ الآخِرَةِ وشَرَفِ المَنازِل ، و إنَّهُ لَضَعيفُ العِبادَةِ.
6– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily a servant will definitely reach high ranks and honourable stations in the Hereafter, through his good nature, even if he is weak in his worship.’

7ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : إنّ صاحِبَ الخُلقِ الحَسنِ لَهُ مِثلُ أجْرِ الصّائمِ القائمِ.
7– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily the one with a good nature has the same reward as the one who fasts and prays during the night.’

8ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : ما مِن شيءٍ أثقَلُ في الميزانِ مِن حُسنِ الخُلقِ.
8– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Nothing will be heavier on the scale of deeds than good nature.’
[`Uyoun Akhbar al-Ridha (AS), v. 2, p. 37, no. 98]

9ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) :إنّ أحَبّكُم إلَيَّ وأقرَبَكُم مِنّي يَومَ القِيامَةِ مَجلِساً أحْسَنُكُم خُلقاً، وأشَدُّكُم تَواضُعاً.
9– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The most beloved and nearest to me on the Day of Resurrection will be the most good-natured, and the one who is most humble.’

10ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : أكمَلُ المؤمنينَ إيماناً أحْسَنُهُم خُلقاً .
10– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The believers with the most perfect faith are those who are the most good-natured.’

تَفسيرُ حُسنِ الخُلُقِ / Explanation of Good Naturedness

11ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : حُسنُ الخُلقِ في ثَلاثٍ : اجْتِنابُ المَحارِمِ ، وطَلَبُ الحَلالِ ، والتَّوَسُّعُ على العِيالِ .
11– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Good naturedness is found in three things: abstaining from the forbidden, seeking the lawful and providing peace and comfort for your family.’

12ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إنَّ بَذْلَ التّحيَّةِ مِن مَحاسِنِ الأخْلاقِ .
12– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Giving greetings comes from beautiful character.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 3404]

13ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ لَمّا سُئلَ عَن حَدّ حُسنِ الخُلقِ ـ : تُلينُ جانِبَكَ ، وتُطيِّبُ كلامَكَ ، وتَلْقى أخاكَ ببِشْرٍ حَسَنٍ
13– Imam al-Sadiq (AS), when he was asked about the meaning and bounds of good naturedness, said, ‘Be lenient, make your words pleasant and meet your brother joyfully.’

معالي الأخلاق / High Moral Virtues

14ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : إنّ اللّه‏َ يُحِبُّ مَعالِيَ الأخْلاقِ ويَكْرَهُ سَفْسافَها.
14– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily Allah loves high moral virtues and detests poor manners.’
[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 5180]

15ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : علَيكُم بمَكارِمِ الأخْلاقِ فإنّها رِفْعَةٌ ، و إيّاكُم والأخْلاقَ الدَّنِيَّةَ فإنّها تَضَعُ الشَّريفَ وتَهْدِمُ المَجْدَ.
15– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘I urge you towards the most noble traits for verily they are exalted and possess a high rank, and beware of
[adopting] vile traits for verily they derogate noble people and destroy the famous and celebrated.’

16ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : ثابِروا على اقْتِناءِ المَكارِمِ.
16– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Persevere in acquiring noble moral traits.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 4712]

تَفسيرُ مَكارِمِ الأخلاقِ / Explanation of Noble Moral Traits

17ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : إنّما بُعِثْتُ لاُتَمِّمَ مَكارِمَ الأخْلاقِ.
17– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily I was deputed to perfect noble moral traits.’
[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 5217]

18ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إنّ اللّه‏َ تباركَ وتعالى خَصَّ رَسولَهُ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) بمَكارِمِ الأخْلاقِ ، فامْتَحِنوا أنفسَكُم ؛ فإن كانتْ فِيكُم فاحْمَدوا اللّه‏َ عزّوجلّ وارغَبوا إلَيهِ في الزّيادَةِ مِنها . فذكَرَها عَشرَةً : اليَقينُ ، والقَناعَةُ ، والصَّبرُ ، والشُّكرُ ، والحِلْمُ ، وحُسنُ الخُلقِ ، والسَّخاءُ ، والغَيرَةُ ، والشَّجاعَةُ ، والمُروءَةُ .
18– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Verily Allah – Blessed and most High – distinguished the Prophet (SAWA) with noble moral traits, therefore examine yourselves and if you find them within yourselves, then praise Allah and beseech Him for an increase in them’, then the Imam listed ten of them, ‘Conviction, contentment, patience, thankfulness, clemency, excellent character, liberality, self-respect, courage and valour.’

19ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ وقد سُئلَ عن مَكارِمِ الأخْلاقِ ـ : العَفْوُ عَمّنْ ظَلَمَكَ ، وصِلَةُ مَن قَطعَكَ ، و إعْطاءُ مَن حَرمَكَ ، وقَولُ الحقِّ ولَو على نَفْسِكَ .
19– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) was asked about noble moral traits, to which he replied, ‘Pardoning someone who has oppressed you, repairing broken ties, giving to the one who has deprived you, and speaking the truth even if it is against yourself.’

خَيرُ المَكارمِ / The Best of the Noble Moral Traits

20ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : خَيرُ المَكارِمِ الإيثارُ .
20– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The best noble moral trait is self-sacrifice*.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 4953]

21ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : أحسَنُ المَكارِمِ عَفْوُ المُقْتَدِرِ وجُودُ المُفْتَقِرِ .
21– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The best noble moral traits are the pardoning by one who has the upper hand and the open-handedness of one who is himself in need.’

22ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : أفضَلُ الكَرَمِ إتْمامُ النِّعَمِ .
22– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The best moral trait is completing one’s favours.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 2983]

ثَمَراتُ حُسنِ الخُلُقِ / The Fruits of Good Naturedness

23ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : حُسنُ الخُلقِ يُثْبِتُ المَودَّةَ.
23– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Good nature establishes love.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 77, p. 148, no. 71]

24ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : حَسِّنْ خُلقَكَ يُخَفِّفِ اللّه‏ُ حِسابَكَ.
24– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Adorn yourself with good nature and Allah will ease your account.’
[Amali al-Saduq, p. 395, no. 9]

25ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : حُسنُ الخُلقِ يَزيدُ في الرِّزقِ.
25– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Being good-natured brings about an increase in sustenance.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 71, p. 396, no. 77]

26ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إنّ البِرَّ وحُسنَ الخُلقِ يَعْمُرانِ الدِّيارَ ، ويَزيدانِ في الْأعْمارِ .
26– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Verily goodness and good nature cause the homes to flourish and increase in life spans.’

27ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : الخُلقُ الحَسنُ يَميثُ الخَطيئةَ كما تَميثُ الشَّمسُ الجَليدَ.
27– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Good nature melts away mistakes just as the sun melts away ice.’
[al-Kafi, v. 2, p. 100, no. 907]

ذَمُّ سوءِ الخُلُقِ / Ill Nature

28ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : سُوءُ الخُلقِ ذَنبٌ لا يُغْفَرُ.
28– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Being ill-natured is a sin that is not forgiven.’
[al-Mahajjat al-Baydha, v. 5, p. 93]

29ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) : إنّ العَبدَ لَيَبلُغُ... بِسُوءِ خُلقِهِ أسْفَلَ دَرَجَةٍ في جَهنَّمَ.
29– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Verily the servant with an ill nature will be in the lowest reach of Hell.’

30ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) ـ وقد قيلَ لَهُ : إنّ فُلانَةَ تَصومُ النّهارَ وتَقومُ اللّيلَ ، وهِي سَيِّئةُ الخُلقِ تُؤْذي جِيرانَها بلِسانِها ـ : لا خَيرَ فيها ، هِي مِن أهْلِ النّارِ .
30– It was said to the Prophet (SAWA) that, ‘Such and such a woman fasts during the days and stands for prayer during the nights, but she is ill-natured and insults her neighbours with her tongue’, the Prophet (SAWA) then said, ‘There is no good in her, she is of the people of the Hellfire.’

31ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : سُوءُ الخُلقِ نَكَدُ العَيْشِ وعذابُ النَّفْسِ .
31– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Ill nature causes life to be miserable and torments the soul.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 5639]

32ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إنَّ سُوءَ الخُلقِ لَيُفسِدُ العَملَ كما يُفسِدُ الخَلُّ العسَلَ.
32– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Verily ill nature spoils one’s deeds just as vinegar spoils honey.’

عاقِبَةُ الخُلُقِ السَّيِّئِ / The Final Outcome of the Ill-natured Person

33ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : مَن ساءَ خُلقُهُ مَلَّهُ أهلُهُ .
33– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever is ill-natured, his family is rendered weary of him.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 8595]

34ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : مَن ضاقَت ساحَتُهُ قَلّتْ راحَتُهُ .
34– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever has low tolerance will see his comfort reduce.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 9192]

35ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : مَن ساءَ خُلقُهُ ضاقَ رِزْقُهُ.
35– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever is ill-natured, his sustenance will be straitened.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 8023]

36ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : اللَّحْمُ يُنْبِتُ اللَّحْمَ ، ومَن تَرَكَ اللَّحْمَ أربَعينَ يَوماً ساءَ خُلقُهُ.
36– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Eating meat produces flesh
[on the body] and the one who avoids meat for forty
[consecutive] days will become ill-natured.’

أفضَلُ الأخلاقِ / The Best Virtues

37ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : أكْرَمُ الأخْلاقِ السَّخاءُ ، وأعَمُّها نَفْعاً العَدلُ.
37– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The noblest moral virtue is liberality and the most beneficial moral virtue is justice.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 3219]

38ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : أشْرَفُ الخَلائقِ التّواضُعُ والحِلْمُ ولِينُ الجانِبِ .
38– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The most eminent moral traits are humbleness, clemency, and leniency.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 3223]

39ـ الإمامُ الباقرُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ وقد سُئلَ عن أفضَلِ الأخْلاقِ ـ : الصّبرُ والسّماحَةُ .
39– Imam al-Baqir (AS), when asked about the best virtues, said, ‘Patience and magnanimity.’

ارتِباطُ السَّجايا بَعضِها بِبَعضٍ / The Link Between Various Traits

40ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إذا كانَ في رَجُلٍ خَلّةٌ رائقَةٌ فانْتَظِروا أخَواتِها .
40– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘When a man has a pure and praiseworthy quality then expect him to have other such qualities.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Saying 445]


41ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) : إنّ خِصالَ المَكارِمِ بَعْضُها مُقيَّدٌ ببَعْضٍ .
41– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Verily the noble moral traits are all connected and linked to each other.’
