الكِذبُ


LYING




الكِذبُ / Lying

1ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): أربَى الرِّبا الكذبُ.
1– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The worst form of usury is lying.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 72, p. 263, no. 47]

2ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إذا كَذَبَ العَبدُ كِذبَةً تَباعَدَ المَلَكُ مِنهُ مَسيرَةَ مِيلٍ مِن نَتْنِ ما جاءَ بهِ.
2– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘When a servant tells one lie, the angels distance themselves a mile away from him because of his foul smell.’

LYING




3ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ الكذبَ بابٌ مِن أبوابِ النِّفاقِ.
3– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Lying is one door of the doors of hypocrisy.’
[Kanz al-`Ummal, no. 8212]

4ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): لا يَكذِبُ الكاذِبُ إلّا مِن مَهانَةِ نفسِهِ، وأصلُ السُّخريَةِ الطُّمأنينَةُ إلى أهلِ الكذبِ.
4– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘A liar only lies because of his disgraceful self, and the origin of mockery is sympathising with people who lie.’

5ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكذبُ خِيانَةٌ .
5– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Lying is treachery.’

6ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): شَرُّ القَولِ الكذبُ .
6– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The most evil of speech is lying.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Sermon 84]

7ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): (عَلامَةُ) الإيمانِ أن تُؤثِرَ الصِّدقَ حَيثُ يَضُرُّكَ علَى الكذبِ حَيثُ يَنفَعُكَ .
7– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The sign of faith is that you prefer truthfulness where it is to your own detriment over lying where it is to your benefit.’

8ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكاذِبُ مُهانٌ ذَليلٌ .
8– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘A liar is degraded and humiliated.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 339]

9ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا سُوءَ أسوَأُ مِن الكذبِ .
9– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘There is no bad thing worse than lying.’

10ـ الإمامُ الكاظمُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ لِهشامٍ وهُو يَعِظُهُ ـ: إنّ العاقِلَ لا يَكذِبُ وإن كانَ فيهِ هَواهُ.
10– Imam al-Kazim (AS), advising Hisham, said, ‘An intelligent person does not lie even whimsically.’

الكِذبُ وَالإيمانُ / Lying and Faith

11ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): جانِبوا الكذبَ؛ فإنّهُ مُجانِبٌ للإيمانِ، الصادِقُ على شَفا مَنجاةٍ وكَرامَةٍ، والكاذِبُ على شرفِ مَهواةٍ ومَهانَةٍ.
11– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Cast aside lying, for it opposes faith. A truthful person is on the verge of salvation and dignity, whereas a liar is on the point of falling down and humiliation.’

12ـ الإمامُ الباقرُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنّ الكذبَ هُو خَرابُ الإيمانِ.
12– Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Lying is the wrecker of faith.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 72, p. 259, no. 23]

13ـ عن الحسن بن محبوب: قلتُ لأبي عبد اللّه‏ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): يكونُ المؤمنُ بَخيلاً ؟ قالَ: نَعَم، قُلتُ: فيكونُ جَباناً؟ قالَ: نَعَم، قلتُ: فيكونُ كَذّاباً؟ قالَ: لا، ولا خائناً، ثُمّ قالَ: يُجبَلُ المؤمنُ على كُلِّ طَبيعَةٍ إلّا الخِيانَةَ والكذبَ.
13– Imam al-Sadiq (AS), when asked by Hasan b. MaHbub, ‘Can a believer be miserly?’, replied, ‘Yes.’
[He said] I asked, ‘And can he be cowardly?’ The Imam replied, ‘Yes.’ I asked, ‘Can he be a liar?’ The Imam said, ‘No, and nor can he be a traitor.’ He then said, ‘A believer can be predisposed by nature for everything except treachery and lying.’

الكِذبُ مِفتاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ / Lying is the Key to All Evil

14ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ الكذبَ يَهدي إلَى الفُجورِ، وإنّ الفُجورَ يَهدي إلَى النّارِ.
14– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Lying leads to immorality, and immorality leads to the Hellfire.’

15ـ الإمامُ الباقرُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنَّ اللّه‏َ عَزَّوجلَّ جَعَلَ لِلشرِّ أقفالاً، وجَعَلَ مَفاتيحَ تِلكَ الأقفالِ الشَّرابَ، والكذبُ شَرٌّ مِن الشَّرابِ.
15– Imam al-Baqir (AS) said, ‘Allah, Mighty and Exalted, made locks for evil, and made the keys to those locks drinking
[alcohol], and lying is even worse than drinking.’

16ـ الإمامُ العسكريُّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): جُعِلَتِ الخَبائثُ في بَيتٍ وجُعِلَ مِفتاحُهُ الكذبَ.
16– Imam al-‘Aaskari (AS) said, ‘The malicious sins have all been put in one house, and the key for it is lying.’

الأمرُ بِتَركِ جِدِّ الكِذبِ وهَزلِهِ / The Command to Refrain from Lying, Both Seriously and Jestingly

17ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ الكذبَ لا يَصلَحُ مِنهُ جِدٌّ ولا هَزلٌ، ولا أن يَعِدَ الرجُلُ ابنَهُ ثُمّ لا يُنجِزَ لَهُ، إنّ الصِّدقَ يَهدي إلَى البِرِّ، وإنَّ البِرَّ يَهدي إلَى الجَنَّةِ، وإنّ الكذبَ يَهدي إلَى الفُجورِ، وإنّ الفُجورَ يَهدي إلَى النّارِ.
17– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Lying is not right, whether it be serious or in jest, nor is it right for a man to make a promise to his child and not fulfil it. Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Heaven.’

18ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): وَيلٌ للذي يُحَدِّثُ فَيكذِبُ ليُضحِكَ بهِ القَومَ! وَيلٌ لَهُ، وَيلٌ لَهُ!
18– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Woe unto he who speaks and lies in order to get people to laugh. Woe to him! Woe to him!’

19ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا يَجِدُ عَبدٌ طَعمَ الإيمانِ حتّى يَترُكَ الكذبَ هَزلَهُ وجِدَّهُ .
19– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘A servant will not experience the taste of faith until he leaves lying, both seriously and in jest.’

20ـ الإمامُ زينُ العابدينَ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ كانَ يقولُ لِوُلدِهِ ـ: اتَّقُوا الكَذِبَ الصَّغيرَ مِنهُ والكبيرَ، في كلِّ جِدٍّ وهَزلٍ، فإنّ الرجُلَ إذا كذبَ في الصَّغيرِ اجتَرَأَ علَى الكبيرِ.
20– Imam Zayn al-`Aabidin (AS) would say to his children, ‘Be cautious of lies, both big and small, both seriously and in jest, for if a man tells a white lie, he will have the audacity to tell a big lie.’

الكُذَيبَةُ / White Lies

21ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): حَسبُكَ مِن الكذبِ أن تُحَدِّثَ بكُلِّ ما سَمِعتَ.
21– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘It suffices as lying for you to repeat everything that you hear.’

22ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) - لَمّا سالتهُ أسماءُ بنتُ يَزيدَُ: إن قالَت إحدانا لِشيءٍ تَشتَهيهِ: لا نَشتَهيهِ، أيُعَدُّ ذلكَ كِذباً ؟ - : إنّ الكِذبَ لَيُكتَبُ حتّى يُكتَبَ الكُذَيبَةُ كُذَيبَةً.
22– The Prophet (SAWA), when Asma’ bint Yazid asked him, ‘If one of us were to say about something we desired: ‘I do not desire it’, would this be considered lying?’ He replied, ‘A lie is written as a lie, and a white lie is written as a white lie.’

23ـ عن عبد اللّه‏ِ بن عامِرٍ: دَعَتني اُمِّي يَوما ورسولُ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) قاعِدٌ في بَيتِنا، فقالت: ها تَعالَ اُعطِكَ، فقالَ لها رسولُ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): ما أرَدتَ أن تُعطِيَهُ ؟ قالت: أرَدتُ أن اُعطِيَهُ تَمراً، فقالَ لَها رسولُ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): أما إنّكِ لو لم تُعطِهِ شيئاً كُتِبَت علَيكِ كِذبَةٌ.
23– `Aabdullah b. ‘Amir narrated, ‘My mother called me one day when the Prophet (SAWA) was sitting in our house, and she said, ‘Come here so I can give you something.’ The Prophet (SAWA) asked her, ‘What did you want to give him?’ She said, ‘I wanted to give him a date.’ So the Prophet (SAWA) said to her, ‘If you were not to have given him anything, it would have been written against you as a lie.’

ثَمَرَةُ الكِذبِ / The Consequence of Lying

24ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنّ الكذبَ يُسَوِّدُ الوَجهَ .
24– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Lying blackens the face.’

25ـ رسولُ اللهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): الكِذبُ يَنقُصُ الرِّزقَ .
25– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘Lying decreases sustenance.’
[al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib, v. 3, p. 596, no. 29]

26ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): ثَمَرَةُ الكذبِ المَهانَةُ في الدُّنيا والعَذابُ في الآخِرَةِ .
26– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘The consequence of lying is humiliation in this world and punishment in the Hereafter.’

27ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): كَثرَةُ الكذبِ تُفسِدُ الدِّينَ وتُعظِمُ الوِزرَ .
27– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Excessive lying corrupts one’s religion and increases one’s burden
[of sins].’

28ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكذبُ يُؤَدِّي إلَى النِّفاقِ.
28– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Lying leads to hypocrisy.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 1181]

29ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): مَن كَذَبَ أفسَدَ مُرُوَّتَهُ.
29– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever lies corrupts his valour.’
[Ghurar al-Hikam, no. 1181]

30ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): مَن عُرِفَ بالكذبِ قَلَّتِ الثِقَةُ بهِ، مَن تَجَنَّبَ الكذبَ صُدِّقَت أقوالُهُ.
30– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Whoever is known to lie will be less trusted, and whoever refrains from lying will be trusted in what he says.’

31ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): يَكتَسِبُ الكاذِبُ بكِذبِهِ ثلاثا: سَخَطَ اللّه‏ِ علَيهِ، واستِهانَةَ النّاسِ بهِ، ومَقتَ الملائكةِ لَهُ.
31– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘A liar acquires three things with his lies: Allah’s discontentment with him, the people’s despising him, and the angels' hatred towards him.’

32ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): اعتِيادُ الكِذبِ يُورِثُ الفَقرَ .
32– Imam Ali (AS) ssaid, ‘Habitually lying brings about poverty.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 72, p. 261, no. 36]

33ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا تَكذِبْ فَيَذهَبَ بَهاؤكَ .
33– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Do not lie, lest your radiance fade away.’
[Bihar al-Anwar, v. 72, p. 192, no. 8]

34ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنّ الرجُلَ لَيَكذِبُ الكِذبَةَ فَيُحرَمُ بها صَلاةَ الليلِ .
34– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘When a man lies, he is deprived of the Night Prayer as a result.’

35ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنَّ مِمّا أعانَ اللّه‏ُ (بهِ) علَى الكذّابينَ النِّسيانَ.
35– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘That which Allah helps
[expose] the liars with is their own forgetfulness.’
[meaning that forgetfulness becomes a way of exposing them, whereby they may lie about something and forget what it is they had said, and then say something contrary to what they had first said (as quoted from the footnote of the source reference)]

أقبَحُ الكِذبِ / The Worst of Lies

36ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): إنّه سَيَأتِي علَيكُم مِن بَعدِي زَمانٌ ليسَ فيهِ شيءٌ أخفى مِن الحَقِّ ولا أظهَرَ مِن الباطِلِ، ولا أكثَرَ مِن الكذبِ على اللّه‏ِ ورسولِهِ.
36– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘There will come a time after me when there will be nothing more hidden than the truth and nothing more manifest than falsehood, and nothing worse than lies about Allah and His Messenger.’

37ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): فواللّه‏ لَأن أخِرَّ مِن السَّماءِ أو تَخطَفَني الطَّيرُ أحَبُّ إلَيَّ مِن أن أكذِبَ على رسولِ اللّه‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ).
37– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘By Allah, falling from the sky or being snatched by a bird would be more beloved to me than to lie about the Messenger of Allah (SAWA).’

38ـ عن أبي بصير: سَمعتُ أبا عبدِ اللّه‏ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) يقولُ: إنّ الكِذبَةَ لَتُفَطِّرُ الصائمَ، قلتُ: وأيُّنا لا يكونُ ذلكَ مِنهُ ؟ ! قالَ: ليسَ حيثُ ذَهَبتَ، إنّما ذلكَ الكذبُ علَى اللّه‏ِ وعلى رسولِهِ وعلىَ الأئمَّةِ صلواتُ اللّه‏ِ علَيهِ وعلَيهِم.
38– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘A lie breaks the fast of a fasting person.’
[Abu Basir said] I asked, ‘But who from among us does not lie?!’ The Imam replied, ‘It is not as you are thinking, rather it is lying about Allah, His Messenger, and the Imams, peace of Allah be upon him and them.’

39ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكَذِبُ علَى اللّه‏ِ وعلى رسولِهِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ) مِن الكبائرِ.
39– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Lying about Allah and His Messenger (SAWA) is a major sin.’

مَوارِدُ جَوازِ الكِذبِ / Instances Where Lying is Permitted

40ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكِذبُ مَذمومٌ إلّا في أمرَينِ: دَفعِ شَرِّ الظَّلَمَةِ، وإصلاحِ ذاتِ البَينِ .
40– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Lying is disparaged except in two situations: to repel the evilness of oppressors and to reconcile between people.’

41ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): الكلامُ ثلاثةٌ: صِدقٌ، وكِذبٌ، وإصلاحٌ بينَ النّاسِ .
41– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘Speech is of three kinds: the truth, the lie and the
[means of] reconciling between people.’

42ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): المُصلِحُ ليسَ بكاذِبٍ .
42– Imam al-Sadiq (AS) said, ‘A reconciler is not a liar.’

التَّورِيَةُ / Dissemblance (tawriya)

43ـ رسولُ اللهِ‏ِ (صَلَّيَ اللهُ عَلَيهِ وَ آلِهِ): إنَّ في المَعاريضِ ما يُغني الرجُلَ العاقِلَ عنِ الكذبِ.
43– The Prophet (SAWA) said, ‘The intelligent man can free himself from lying by using the contexts of his speech.’

44ـ الإمامُ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) ـ لمّا سَألَهُ عبدُاللّه‏ِ بنُ بكيرٍ عنِ الرجُلِ يُستَأذَنُ علَيهِ فيقولُ لِجاريَتِهِ قُولي: ليسَ هُو هاهُنا ؟ ـ لا بَأسَ، ليسَ بكذبٍ.
44– Imam al-Sadiq (AS), when `Aabdullah b. Bukayr asked him about a person who wants to visit him and he tells his servant to say: ‘He is not here’
[and whether that is permissible], replied, ‘There is no problem, it is not lying.’

استِماعُ الكِذبِ / Listening to a Lie

45ـ الإمامُ عليٌّ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): لا تُمَكِّنِ الغُواةَ مِن سَمعِكَ .
45– Imam Ali (AS) said, ‘Do not give your hearing
[i.e. attention] to those who have gone astray.’
[Nahj al-Balagha, Letter 1]

46ـ سُئلَ الصّادقُ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ) عنِ القُصّاصِ: أيَحِلُّ الاستِماعُ لَهُم ؟ فقالَ: لا، وقالَ (عَلَيهِ الّسَلامُ): مَن أصغى إلى ناطِقٍ فَقَد عَبَدَهُ، فإن كانَ النّاطِقَ عن اللّه‏ِ فقد عَبَدَ اللّه‏َ، وإن كانَ النّاطِقَ عن إبليسَ فقد عَبَدَ إبليسَ.
46– It is narrated in Bihar al-Anwar: Imam al-Sadiq (AS) was asked about storytellers and whether it is permitted to listen to them?’ He said, ‘No’, and he (AS) said, ‘Whoever listens to a speaker worships him. But if he speaks about Allah
[and anything associated], then it is as if he is worshipping Allah, and if he speaks from or about Satan
[and anything associated with him], then it is as if he is worshipping Satan.’
